Battery Recall Information. Please Read Carefully!

We’ve updated the SN list to include an additional affected model with the 5th and 6th characters listing “NI” in Storm and Pocket series. Please check to make sure your unit is not part of the list below.

We are contacting you regarding an urgent RIX battery safety issue affecting certain earlier production models. We have received multiple field reports of flat-top single-wrap (unprotected) lithium-ion batteries overheating, emitting smoke, catching fire and possible explosion under specific conditions. Although these incidents are rare, they present a serious safety risk. Out of an abundance of caution, we are issuing a voluntary battery recall.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of battery is an 18650?

An 18650 is a cylindrical lithium-ion cell, 18 mm across and 65 mm long, which is where the name comes from. This RIX cell was a 3200 mAh Li-ion 18650. Many thermal devices use them because a spare swaps in seconds in the field.

How long do 18650 cells last?

A good 18650 usually handles a few hundred full charge cycles before capacity drops noticeably, and storing it partly charged in a cool place helps. Retire any cell with a torn wrap, swelling, leaks or unusual heat right away, which is RIX's own safety advice.
