Frequently Asked Questions

Does night vision use IR, and does the REAP-IR need it?

Digital and tube night vision rely on infrared light, often from an IR illuminator, to show you a picture in the dark. The REAP-IR is a thermal scope, so it needs no light at all. It reads heat directly with its 640x480 sensor, which means no illuminator to mount or keep charged.

What gives off the infrared heat a thermal scope sees?

Everything warmer than absolute zero gives off infrared heat, from a coffee mug to a parked truck engine. Animals are usually much warmer than the ground around them, which is why a coyote or hog glows on the REAP-IR screen. Sun-warmed rocks and roads can show up bright too until they cool after dark.
